Graduate Women In Science (GWIS) is a non-profit professional organization that works to advance the participation and recognition of women in science. We also foster research through grants, awards, and fellowships.
The GWIS Omicron Chapter serves the metropolitan Washington DC area (Maryland, Virginia, DC). Omicron sponsors local monthly meetings and lectures on current research and health topics. Our members are also dedicated to encouraging young scientists through outreach and mentoring.

Omicron is so proud of our very own Dr. Elizabeth Weisburger, who was recently awarded the Distinguished Scientist Award for 2010 by the American College of Toxicology. This award can be added to her many other honors that recognize her accomplishments and contributions as a reknowned chemist in the areas of toxicology and cancer research.
Omicron congratulates Dr. Frances O. Kelsey (Honorary Member for Scientific Research, 1988) who was honored at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (Maryland) on September 15, 2010 with an award to commemorate her service and mark the 50th anniversary of her courage and dedication to science-based decision making in the refusing to authorized the markeitng of thalidomide in the U.S. Her efforts prevented un-tolled numbers of babies in this country from suffeing devastating birth defects and reflect the Agency's commitment to the highest scientific standards in protecting the public health.
Omicron congratulates RITA R. COLWELL (Honorary Member of GWIS and Member of Sigma Xi), distinguished professor at the University of Maryland and John Hopkins University, who has been named the 2010 Stockholm Water Prize Laureate. She received the prize at a royal award ceremony September 9 during the 2010 World Water Week in Stockholm. Her pioneering research on the prevention of waterborne infectious diseases, especially cholera, has helped protect the health and lives of millions. Dr. Colwell delivered most memorable lectures on her research in India to Omicron in the National Naval Medical Center one evening in the 1990's, and most recently at the 2008 GWIS Annual Meeting that Omicron organized in Rockville, MD.
